6 Week Saturday Morning Pottery with James Smith – November

We are delighted that James Smith has joined our teaching team here at Sundragon Community Pottery.

James is a multi-disciplinary artist/maker working primarily in caramics, creating both functional and decorative wares informed by Japanese design aesthetics.  He says he, “generally contrasts sharp minimal lines with organic textures, limited earthy palettes and unglazed clay.”

James says, “I studied Fine Art BA(Hons) at Margaret Street School of Art, at Birmingham City University, focusing primarily on painting and installation; I first put my hands to ceramics during the pandemic, joined a community potteryshortly after, and have been making small batches of work, periodically since.”

This 6 week course, starts on Saturday 7th November 2026, and is suitable for beginners and improvers, who wish to explore working with clay.

These classes are held in our bespoke basement Studio 1 at Moseley School of Art.  496, Moseley Road.  B12 9AH

In 6 weeks you will learn some techniques of hand building, and some throwing of basic cylinder forms and bowls.

Pots that students wish to keep, are paid for by weight.  This nominal fee covers the costs of two firings and all glaze and decoration materials.

Each two and a half hour class runs Saturday mornings between 10am and 12.30pm, on the following dates :-
